One of our goals as a district is that everyone is a reader.
That belief doesn’t just live in our classrooms. It lives in our leadership, our homes, and our community. Recently, our School Board took a step that reflects that commitment in a simple but powerful way - they started a School Board book club. This isn’t just adding one more initiative. It is modeling what we value. When our board members choose to read, reflect, and share their thinking publicly, they send a clear message: reading matters in South Kitsap.
Even more, they are inviting our entire community to join them.
Each month, the board will select a book, read it, and share reflections during a board meeting. It’s an open invitation for students, staff, families, and community members to read alongside them, think together, and be part of the conversation.
The first book they’ve selected is The Hike by Alison Farrell…a story that captures curiosity, exploration, and the joy of discovery. Following that, they’ll read Westfallen by Ann and Ben Brashares…a story that invites imagination and deeper thinking. Once they have read each book, they will donate a copy to our school libraries.
This is what literacy looks like in action. We are creating a culture where reading is visible, shared, and valued by everyone.
In South Kitsap, we are not only encouraging our students to be readers. We are showing them what it looks like.
